Women's basketball starts off strong in conference
Lady Flyers upset top 10 Grand Valley State on the road.
The Lewis University women's basketball team has
started the season off well, going 4-2 overall,
including a win over No.7 Grand Valley State and a 2-0
start in conference play.
They started their season off at home in the
GLVC/GLIAC challenge where they fell to Lake Superior
State 80-75. Lewis flew out of the gate and jumped
out to a 31-16 less than halfway through the first
half. However, the Lakers would storm back and led at
the half 43-42.
After a 6-0 run to open the second
half, the rest of the game was nip and tuck. A key
turnover down the stretch though cost the Flyers the
game. Freshmen Mandie Morelock and Kelly Dianis led
the team with 14 points apiece, and Morelock did so on
5-5 shooting in just nine minutes. The Flyers were
out-shot 51-42 percent from the floor.
The next night the Flyers struggled to a 24-24 tie
with Michigan Tech, after trailing 10-0 to open the
game. In the second half though Dianis caught fire on
her way to 19 second half points, and 25 for the game.
She helped to lead a 21-7 run in the second half to
put the game away. Darcee Schmidt added 14 points and
seven rebounds, while Shante Glenn had a double-double
with 10 points and 10 boards.
"Our outside shooting is helping us out this year
with Kelly and Jackie Waller, and there are a bunch of
other new players who can shoot and help us open up
the inside," coach Lynn Plett said.
The Flyers next game also happened to be against
Michigan Tech, this time at Grand Valley State. This
time Lewis couldn't take advantage of a 24-12 run in
the second half as they fell 56-55, failing to convert
on two shots at the end of the game to win. Michigan
Tech shot 39 percent to Lewis' 32 percent from the
field. Schmidt led the way with 15 points and Mary
