Homework overload, paper deadlines approaching, reviewing, studying, late nights, and early tests. These are all indications the end of the semester is near and finals are almost here. Studying for finals can be a stressful act but the library is going to stay open for 24 hours leading up to finals.
This is the first year that the library will be open for 24 hours for the weeks immediately before finals week. In the past, it just stayed open later.
The change came around when students requested that campus services like the library should be open 24 hours a day.
Some larger universities have their libraries open 24 hours all the time but Lewis does not have the staff to do that. The policy is a compromise between not being able to open 24 hours all semesters and not having it open for 24 hours at all.
"I think it is a very positive move and hope students see it in that light," Laura Patterson, library director/head of public services said. "It is important to support the students as much as possible," said Patterson.
The library will be staffed as usual; a reference librarian will be available at all times and there will be student assistants. The current part-time reference librarians and student assistants have agreed to pick up an extra shift.
There will be three shifts, the usual two shifts in the morning and evening and then a shift that runs from midnight to 8 am.
"That is our role; to support the students," said Patterson.
The librarians have no idea how many students will take advantage of the library being open for 24 hours.
They seem to think there will be students in there until about two or three in the morning and then another insurgence again at six or so.
Some highlights for the library during finals: more than 50 computer workstations available, study group rooms available, wireless Internet access throughout, video store rentals available, photocopy machines available, reference librarians on staff 24 hours, computer lab assistants on staff and help desk assistants available.
