Heading into last Thursday's GLVC Conference quarterfinal match up with Northern Kentucky in Kansas City, Mo., it certainly wasn't like either team didn't know what to expect from one another.

They Flyers and NKU staged an epic five-game match during the regular season on Oct. 1, which Lewis ultimately fell short in. Despite facing a NKU team that was 26-6 and on a nine match winning steak, the Flyers battled throughout, only to come up on the short end of the stick in a tough 30-24, 30-28, 28-30, 30-26 loss that ended Lewis' season. The Flyers finished with an overall record of 17-13, and the program has now won 16 or more matches for six consecutive seasons.

"This was a tough way to end our season, but the girls played hard and I couldn't have asked for a better effort. Things that plagued us all season long came back to haunt us tonight once again," said Flyer head coach Karen Lockyer.

Seeded sixth in the eight-team tournament, Lewis came into their match with third seeded NKU brimming with confidence and hoping to make a Cinderalla run all they way to the conference championship. They Flyers battled their much taller opponents point for point, only to come undone due to some sensational serving by the Norse. The Flyers were hit for a whopping 20 aces, which proved to be the difference in the match, as Lewis led in almost every other statistical category. NKU led the conference and ranked 17th in Division II in service aces during the year.

"In my mind, we outplayed them by a considerable margin, but obviously our serve receive was our nemesis. In every other facet I thought we played good enough to win, but there's no way you can beat a good team giving up 20 aces," Lockyer said.

Junior outside Theresa Nugent finished the season on a tear and led the team with 20 kills in this match. She hit just over .350 and also recorded 14 digs to go along with five blocks. Freshmen outside Aubrey Dodlinger chipped in with 13 kills, while middle Becca Lisle added seven and recorded a career-high eight blocks defensively. Sophomore setter Andrea Morrone passed out 45 assists on the night and added a team-high 16 digs. As a team, the Flyers had a higher hitting percentage, more kills, and more blocks than the Norse, but once again were done in with their poor serve receive.
