On Saturday, October 22, the men of Lewis attempted to win their second cross country conference title in a row.
The push to win the 2005 Great Lakes Valley Conference title was unattainable in the face of stiff competition, but junior Andy Tremble was still able to claim the conference title.
Lewis wasn't happy with second, but Tremble couldn't be happier with first.
"We went out looking to repeat the [conference] title; unfortunately, we were just bested by a better team at the time," he said.
The better team was the University of Southern Indiana, which underscored Lewis by putting six runners in the top 10. Lewis coach Rick Wemple agreed with the same assessment of the team, saying, "I thought we ran very, very well."
Sinan Khamo, Lewis's consistent No. 2 man, said, "Everyone ran really well with the new coach's training. I think we had lots of PRs [personal records] for most of the team." In Rensselear, Ind., the St. Joseph's 8K course was about 15 seconds short, leading to some very fast times for the team.
Tremble led the entire race with USI's Rey Alvarez. With a mile to go, Tremble dropped the hammer to win by almost 10 seconds. He was awarded with All-GLVC honors and GLVC Runner of the Year with a time of 24:26.
Tremble was backed by Khamo, who was 11th at 25:18, Larry Anzalone at 13th with 25:24, Andrew Northrup at 17th with 25:33 and Chris Foley was 23rd with 25:47. Pushing the top five were sixth and seventh men Alberto Villa (28th, 25:55) and Emory Burdette (30th, 25:57).
The team wants to continue to improve and hopes are still alive to advance to the NCAA National Cross Country Meet. Northup believes that being top four in the Great Lakes Region is a possibility, despite some stiff competition, saying "It's gonna be really close between us and Saginaw Valley State. If we can put everything we've worked on this season together, it's gonna be down to the wire."
The Lewis team competes Saturday, Nov. 5 at Big Rapids, Mich. in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Championship Regional.
