If almost any volleyball coach at any level, men's or women's, could dream up a model outside hitter for their team, they would probably wish for a player who can jump higher than anyone on the court. Maybe someone who can seemingly hit the ball as hard as a Kerry Wood fastball. Well, in Theresa Nugent's case, she tends to look at this quite differently and so far, no coach she's ever had has seemed to mind.

In case one was not aware, Nugent is the starting outside hitter on the Lewis women's volleyball team. Nugent, a 5'10" junior from Oak Lawn, leads this year's team with 340 kills thus far this season, The women's volleyball team will have two more matches followed by the GLVC Conference Tournament.

"I feel like I've had a pretty good year up until now. I started the season kind of slow, but the past 10 matches or so I've been starting to hit my stride, and I hope it carries on into the conference tourney," said Nugent. Nugent played high school volleyball at Queen of Peace, where she was a two-time all-conference player and earned honorable mention all-state both junior and senior years. Her senior year was special because she helped lead her team to a 32-8 record, as well as a conference and sectional championship.

"I actually first started playing volleyball in about third grade, when my mom introduced me to it. I fell in love with the sport immediately and started playing competitively in club by fifth grade," she said.

Nugent spent quite a bit of time deciding where to further her educational career.

"I didn't decide on Lewis until like late April," Nugent said. "I felt like Lewis had built a solid program and I would have a chance to be a part of it and hopefully make an impact almost immediately. Plus, they had a good nursing program."

Nugent has started as an outside hitter from the moment she stepped on the court her freshmen year. For her sophomore campaign, Nugent began to make quite a name for herself around the GLVC Conference.
