In many ways, the start of the Lewis men's basketball 2005-2006 campaign will almost feel like a fresh start for Flyer Head Coach Kyle Green.

Green will embark on his second season as head coach at Lewis after serving as an assistant to Tom Creane and the Marquette Golden Eagles in 2003-2004. Last season, Green was faced with getting to know a whole new coaching staff.

Not to mention, developing a rapport with the 15 fresh faces of which made his team. This year, Green is bursting with energy and excitement for the start of the season as the Flyers opened up with an exhibition game on Thursday at Notre Dame.

"I am very excited for this season. I love coming to work with these guys every day in practice, and I really feel like how hard these guys are working, along with their great attitude will make this a very special season for us," Green said.

After finishing last season with a 10-17 overall record, including a 5-15 mark in the GLVC Conference, Green and his staff knew they had quite a bit of work to get done over the summer. Lewis lost four of its top six scorers, including leading scorers Anthony Scala and Steve Turner, the only two Flyers to average double figures.

The coaches certainly did their homework this summer, as they will welcome six new fresh faces to the Lewis program.

The new team members include five incoming freshmen and two transfers. Add in the eight returning players from last year's team, and Green is ready to rock and roll.

"I definitely have more of a comfort zone with our team and coaches, because everyone knows what to expect from each other and the rest of the league," Green said. "Our whole team has shown a lot of excitement and enthusiasm so far in practices and meetings, and all 13 players are each making individual commitments to get better as basketball players. The sky's the limit for us."

Leading the way for the Flyers this season will be a pair of starters from last year in shooting guard Pat Monaghan and senior center John Loeffelholz. The man in the middle from Dubuque, Iowa leads all Flyer returnees in points and rebounds from last year, when he averaged just over nine points and five boards a game, while starting all 27 games. Monaghan, a senior who played his first two seasons at Harper College, chipped in between a part-time starter and sixth man with a little over eight points a game, including a team-best 51 percent field goal percentage to go along with a 43 percent mark from the three-point line, good for eighth in the conference.
