Hunger week raises awareness, helps needy

Issue date: 11/14/05 Section: News
Hunger Week was a huge success this past week for the Lewis community. In addition to the dozen or so fundraisers held by University Ministry, many food donations were made in just about every building on campus.

Many speakers were brought to campus to help share their experiences of poverty first-hand.

Kicking off Hunger Week was an underwear, socks and t-shirts collection Sunday, a Texas Hold'em for Hunger tournament on Wednesday, and on Thursday a Baggin' for Bucks Tournament. The winner of the Texas Hold'em tournament won $100 and donated $20 back to charity.

The Penny Wars, which began Monday of last week, consisted of students from different clubs and committees competing to donate as much money as possible to the less fortunate. Faculty and students helped out by buying the pennies back for cash, saving Lewis the trouble of eventually having to exchange the pennies somewhere else.

All afternoon Friday, almost in a frenzy, students approached the Penny Wars headquarters in the cafeteria to exchange their cash for pennies.

The top three groups, as of Friday, were Amnesty International, Black Student Union, and Latin American Student Organization.

From the the penny drive alone, over $600 was brought in. The overall goal for donations during Hunger Week was $5,000.

In addition to the Penny Wars, various students from a number of organizations walked around campus and collected money in cans. A bake sale also took place, which helped add to the funds that would be donated at the end of the week.

Many were moved by the speakers who talked about their journey to Ethiopia and Bolivia.

Kevin Ludden of the University Ministry said, "the seminars were really powerful. We had students talking about their experiences working in Bolivia and Ethiopia and how their hearts were transformed."

During the Bolivia trip, Lewis students who traveled there helped restore ruinous homes and build new ones, among other goodwill works.
