The Flyer newspaper won a prestigious award, second place, in the Best of Show competition for newspaper excellence at the recently concluded 2005 National College Media Convention held Oct. 26 to 30 in Kansas City.
The Reflector, a college newspaper in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, bested the Flyer for first place in the non-weekly tabloid size category. The other winners include: The Ionian of Iona College, New Rochelle, New York. (3rd place); The Otter Realm of California State University, Monterey Bay, Seaside, Calif. (4th place); and The Leader of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wisc. (5th place).
This is the first time that the Flyer won a national award for newspaper excellence. In the past few years, however, the paper has won numerous state and regional awards for various categories ranging from sports, in-depth reporting, features, opinions, layout, headline writing, to general excellence.
Also at the same national convention, Flyer Adviser Dr. Rey Rosales was named as Honor Roll Newspaper Adviser of the Year (2005). This is also the first time that a Flyer moderator has won a national award.
"I didn't think we had a chance at winning anything, especially after I saw all the hundreds of newspapers we were competing against spread out on the table at the convention." said Rosales.
David Ashby, editor-in-chief of the Flyer, said, "all those long nights in the newspaper office have really paid off. Next year, though, we'll be gunning for first place."
