Women's tennis finishes fifth in GLVC

Schmitz makes All-Conference for second straight year

The Lewis women's tennis team finshed its fall season earlier this month by coming in fifth place in the Great Lakes Valley Tournament in Owensboro, Ky.

Following the completion of the tournament, Lewis' Alison Schmitz was selected to the 12-member All-GLVC team for the second consecutive season.

The Flyers opened play with a 5-2 loss to Southern Indiana on Oct. 7. Number five doubles player Lauren Koveleski won 6-2, 1-6, 6-3, for the Flyers over Casey Froederman, as did Katie Popp and Koveleski against Froderman and Maggie Coffman in the number two doubles match, 8-6.
Lewis' lost the number two singles match, with Erin Piechocinski falling to Ashley Rees, 6-3, 1-6, 6-0; the number four singles match, as Popp was beaten 6-1, 6-2 by Kimberly Decker; the number six singles match, with Jenny Jones getting beat 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 by Coffman; the number one doubles match, with Schmitz and Jordan Lynde falling short 9-7 against Audra Bartelt and Rees; and the number three doubles match, as Froderman and Coffman suffered an 8-3 defeat by Popp and Koveleski.

Lewis began consolation play with a 5-4 win over Bellarmine the same day. Winnners included Schmitz at first singles, 6-0, 6-2, over Maria Hornung; Popp at fourth singles, 1-6, 6-0, 6-0, over Jenna Hurt; Koveleski at fifth singles, 6-0, 6-0, over Jade Best; Jones at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-0, over Katie Gibbs; and Popp and Koveleski at third doubles, 8-2, over Best and Katie Sutton.

Flyers players ending up in defeat were Piechochinski at number two singles, 6-2, 6-2, versus Monica Penon; Lynde at number three singles, 6-1, 7-5, against Elizabeth Bohnert; Schmitz and Lynde at number one doubles, 8-4, versus Penon and Bohnert; and Piechocinski and Jones at No. 2 doubles, 8-4, against Hornung and Hurt.

In the fifth-place match, Lewis beat Northern Kentucky, 5-4, on Oct. 8. Lewis players that were victorious were Popp over Stephanie Alcorn, 7-5, 6-1, in the number four singles match; Koveleski over Courtney Mers, 6-0, 6-0, in the number five singles match; Jones over Devan Yates, 6-0, 6-0, in the number six singles match; Schmitz and Lynde over Lauren Luetzinger and Alcorn, 8-4, in the number one doubles match; and Popp and Koveleski over Myers and Heather Robertson, 8-0, in the number three doubles match.

Suffering losses from Lewis were Schmitz at first singles versus Leutzinger, 6-2, 6-3, Piechcinski at second singles against Ana Dorado, 6-0, 6-2, Lynde at third singles versus Clara Dorado, 6-0, 6-1, and Piechocinski and Jones at second doubles against Dorado and Clara Dorado, 8-5.

The Flyers finished up the fall season at 5-4. Schmitz, a sophomore, made All-GLVC. She went 10-2 overall and 5-2 against league opponents as the Flyers' number one singles player and teamed with Lynde to go 9-4 overall and 5-3 in the GLVC at number one doubles. For her career, she is 23-13 individually, including a 10-4 mark against GLVC opponents, and 35-10 in doubles play, with a 14-3 record against opponents from the conference.
