The Lewis University men's soccer team followed a tough road trip with two critical victories this past weekend at home.
Cathal Brady started Friday's game off well by recording a hat trick to help the Flyers jump out to a 3-0 lead. After just one goal in the first half, the Flyers opened it up in the second half. Brady netted two goals and Anthony Marsico nailed his second and third goals of the season to give Lewis the 5-0 victory. Tito Lara had two assists in the game for the winners. Lewis dominated the game, outshooting St. Joes 15-6. Brian Byrne and Anthony Szymel had a save apiece to combine on the Flyers' fifth shutout.
"We missed Marsico a lot when he was injured," coach Evan Fiffles said. "We always thought we could score goals, and we came out with a sense of urgency right off the bat."
Lewis continued their momentum into Sunday's game against Indianapolis, where two first half goals were enough to win 2-1. Lara started the scoring off by getting a loose ball goal 30 minutes into the game for his fourth goal of the season. Brady scored the future game-winning goal with less than a minute left in the first half for his team-leading eighth goal of the year. He got the rebound from a missed shot by Gavin Grogan that hit the post. The Flyers allowed a goal early in the first half, but their defense stayed strong and preserved the win.
The previous weekend Lewis fell twice to division opponents by getting shut out in both games. In the first game it faced Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, the number two ranked team in the country. The Flyers were able to shut Edwardsville down in the first half before the Cougars tallied three goals in the second half for a 3-0 victory. Byrne recorded three saves for Lewis.
Things did not get much better for the Flyers in their next game as they fell to Quincy, 1-0. Byrne made seven saves, but a penalty kick goal and a lack of offense did in the Flyers in the end.
"We have to have a desire to win each game," Fiffles said. "We lacked mental preperation right away, and the other teams that we have been playing have that. They haven't beaten us in some time and it gives them an extra incentive. It is up to the upperclassmen to prepare the freshmen to play."
The Flyers conclude regular season play this week with a trip to Kentucky Wesleyan and Southern Indiana before the conference tournament the following week.
"Last week was the best we have played all year, and I hope we can keep the momentum," Fiffles said. "I want two wins and two shutouts, and go into the conference tournament with five straight wins by beating Northern Iowa as well."
