There is always a great debate on who has the better fans, the Sox or the Cubs. However, there is no doubt as to who has more total fans: it is the Cubbies. The difference between the fans are great, but both groups can be very frusterating to deal with.
Before I start bashing Chicago fans, I will admit that there are some good true fans out there supporting both teams, they just are not of a majority. My version of good fans are that they are there through the thick and thin, and they are truthful about their team.
Let's begin with the World Series-bound White Sox. This is the team that fails to sell out on a yearly basis, even when they are doing well, like this year. In past years I might have seen a total of 20 people wearing Sox clothing or hats. Now all of a sudden there is someone walking around with Sox clothes on everywhere I turn, not to mention seeing the Cell filled to capacity for every playoff game.
My question is where were all these extra fans when the team was just at .500? My guess is they only care about the Sox when they are winning so they can shove it into Cubs fans' faces. As a person who roots for the Sox, but is not a die-hard Sox fan, it is disappointing to know that I am a better fan than 75 percent of Sox fans.
On the other hand, Cubs fans will always show up to their games no matter how pathetic of a team they have, and they have had some bad ones. They are also wearing Cubs clothing throughout the year and still are now, despite being long gone and having the Sox make the series. In one aspect this is stupid because what do they have to brag about, but in another aspect, it is commendable because they are showing their spirit no matter what is going on elsewhere. I still think part of the reason they are doing this is to show Sox fans that there are more of them and that they are more loyal, but it may just be their love for those lovable losers, the Cubs.
Despite being true and loyal Cubs fans, they make up for it by thinking they are going to the World Series every year. They always make excuses whenever they lose a game, and many believe that they should be 162-0 every year. All they ever do is brag about how good they are and how they always sell out. I never knew that how good a team is depends on how many fans they have, but if it was the case, the Cubbies may actually win something. For a team who has not won a World Series since 1908, their fans are quite optimistic. Not to mention a team who has only been in the playoffs a handful of times in the past 25 years.
Nothing sums up Cubs fans better than a person who said they will not lose more than two games in a row the rest of the season after taking three of four from the Cardinals. They proceed to lose their next three right after that statement, two to the Rockies. There were also the tons of fans who said that they were going to pass St. Louis up. That pretty much makes my case for me as to why Cubs fans are not good fans either. What a joke.
So the question is, who has the better fans? Well, after further review, Sox fans are better because they are realisitc and much less annoying, not to mention the fact that they are bragging now less than Cubs fans brag when they are at .500.
