The long-awaited opening of the renovated weight room will prove a benefit to the campus.

The newly renovated weight room now has walls, unlike the previous room that was enclosed by a cage. The renovation also added 400 square feet, new floors, air conditioning and a sound system. There is a lot more room so more people can come in and use everything. There is $65,000 worth of new equipment. There are now five-and-a-half racks and two platforms and many other new pieces of equipment to help students, athletes and members.

"Before you could only work your upper body. Now you can work your total body; a more comprehensive workout," said Jill Siegfried, director of Student Recreation, Fitness and Wellness.

The last time the weight room was renovated was in 1996. This time, students expressed they wanted a new, improved place to workout. There were focus groups of students to make sure the new equipment benefited the students.

"Compared to the last weight room, this is fantastic," student worker Scot Younger said of the renovation. "I don't think the students know how good this stuff is."

The weight room re-opened on Sept. 6. Many wondered why the weight room did not open when school started, as was originally planned.

"Everyone worked hard, the guys came in on weekends to make sure the room was done on time," Sigfried said.

What ended up delaying the opening was the equipment arriving late. The manufacturers took on too many orders this summer, delaying delivery, but they did give Lewis seven new spinners to make up for the wait. So even though the weight room did not open on time, it did receive $7,000 of new equipment.

For students who would like to workout and don't know where to start, or would just like advice, Younger is available Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, from 1 to 6 pm, to help develop workout programs.

"There is no such thing as a universal workout for every individual," Younger said. "But it is good for everyone to workout."

Whether you are building muscle, staying in shape or getting in shape, the renovated weight room can help you.

"If you want to workout, make sure you use the right technique," Younger said. "I am here to teach you how to lift properly."

The hours of operation for the weight room is Monday through Thursday 1 to 10 pm, Friday 1 to 4 pm, Saturday noon to 4 pm and Sunday to 10 pm.
