Back-to-back dominating victories over conference opponents helped the Lewis women's tennis team stay in second place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Flyers continued to roll through the GLVC by defeating Missouri-St. Louis and St Joseph's.
The loss to conference rival Indianapolis has seemed to serve as a wake-up call for the Flyers, who have won two games in a row and three straight conference games since with no signs of looking back. The Flyers currently sit in second place in the conference behind only Indianapolis, holding true to coach Jill Siegfried's prediction that the team would finish no lower than second place in the conference. But before the winning streak could get started, Lewis hit a bump in the road.
For the second straight home game, a non-conference opponent edged out the Flyers. After winning four of six singles matches with victories from Allison Schmitz, Katie Popp, Lauren Koveleski and Jenny Jones, the Flyers were swept in all three of the doubles matches and lost to Illinois Wesleyan, 5-4. However, in almost a repeat performance of the previous weekend, the Flyers seemed to take the loss in stride and quickly recovered.
Once again led by the team's No. 1 player, Schmitz, the Flyers bounced right back the next day and eased by Missouri-St. Louis with a 7-2 victory, for their third conference win of the season. Schmitz once again took care of Missouri's top player, Neringa Bandzeviciute (6-1, 6-0).
"We always expect the top seeds to play the best. The key games are in the lower seeds," said Siegfried.
Other results included Erin Piechocinski (Lewis) def. Christy Bronson, 6-1, 1-6, 6-2, Popp (Lewis) def. Molly Striler (UMSL), 6-0, 6-1, and Koveleski (Lewis) def. Adriana Garcia (UMSL), 6-1, 6-2.
The Flyers then swept all three of the doubles matches with wins from the teams of Schmitz/Jordan Lynde, Piechocinski/Stacie Christensen, and Popp/Koveleski.
Two days later, the Flyers continued their winning ways by once again breezing by a conference opponent when they traveled to Indiana to play St. Joseph's. Things didn't seem to change all that much from the last game as once again Lewis got dominating wins from the usual suspects of Schmitz, Lynde, Popp, Jones, and a come-from-behind win by Piechocinski. Piechocinski lost the first set 6-4 to St. Joe's No.2 player, Jessica Conlin, only to reverse the score and win 6-4 in the second game, and then won a long tiebreak set, 12-10. Doubles were no different from the previous game, as the Flyers swept all three matches.
The two straight wins puts the Flyers at 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. They will finish their home schedule the first weekend of October by hosting Kentucky Wesleyan and St. Ambrose. They then close out the regular season on Oct. 4 with a chance to avenge one of their losses when they travel to play Olivet Nazerene.
