In a time when life is busy with family and career, many people find it difficult to finish their education or to pursue a higher degree.

Lewis University recognizes this and, in response, has regional campuses throughout the south and southwest suburbs to accommodate the people with the desire to finish or continue their education.

One such campus is located in Oak Brook, Ill. The current facility has been opened since 2003, however Lewis has been a presence in the premier business district since the 1980s. In 2004, the facility expanded to 13,500 feet with 10 classrooms, a computer lab, two conference rooms and a lounge. This was done to allow for Lewis' continued enrollment growth.

Linda D. McCabe is the regional campus coordinator and oversees a six-day per week operation. Jim Doane, assistant site coordinator, and Hetal Vithalani, conference assistant also contribute to the operation of the regional campus.

McCabe schedules day and evening activities, room usage, and manages the staff and student workers to ensure the needs of the faculty, staff, students, and visitors are met. The business community often seeks a day facility for conferencing and meeting space.

Outreach initiatives with the community are important to McCabe as well. She states, "Active association in sync with Lewis University's mission statement in community organizations promotes and strengthens Lewis' visibility in the area."

The College of Business/Graduate School of Management was the first to schedule classes at the Oak Brook Campus. "This fit the corporate culture of the area," McCabe explained. The Accelerated Program soon followed to meet the needs of returning adult learners.

Jamie, a sociology/political science major, chose the Oak Brook campus because of the courses offered and the times they are offered. She hopes to eventually go on to law school, focusing on child advocacy.

Valerie, a business management major, currently works as a paralegal. "I just got promoted to manager, so I'm thrilled," she said. "I enjoy what I do, but wanted to get my bachelors degree. It's a personal goal for me."

Many colleges offer Accelerated Programs, but students like Jamie and Valerie chose Lewis because of the short length of its program. It can be daunting to work fulltime and attend classes in the evening, but finishing their education is well worth it.

Graduate and undergraduate classes are also offered during the day at the Oak Brook Regional Campus. According to McCabe, the Master of Science in Public Safety Administration program is drawing many students during the day. The campus also holds weekend seminars that students enrolled at other campuses can, and often do, attend.
