This past weekend the Lewis women's
soccer team played two home games, tying
the fi rst and losing the second.
The fi rst game was on Friday, Sept. 9,
against Drury, where Lewis managed a 1-1
tie. The second game was played on Sunday,
against Rockh
u r s t . U n f o r t
unately, the
Flyers were
defeated 3-0.
Friday
a f t e r n o o n
was the Great
Lakes Valley
C o n f e r e n c e
opener for
both teams. It
was a defensive battle in the fi rst half
as neither team could muster much on
offense. The Flyers responded quickly in
the second half as senior Loren Pellizzari
scored two minutes into the stanza.
Lewis was up 1-0 until Drury's Rachel
Sutcliffe scored at the 83-minute mark. The
game went into two sessions of overtime,
but neither team scored. The score could
have been different if goalkeeper Lindsay
Frederick had not saved fi ve shots.
"I was pleased with the way we played
against an ex-Division One team, but we
should have one the game," coach Bill
Bruno said.
It could also have been different had it
not been for two controversial offside calls.
The fi rst happened when a Drury player
appeared offsides on the goal they scored,
but it was not called. The next came in the
fi rst overtime when the Flyers were called
for offsides, but appeared to be onside.
"Stuff happens," Bruno said. "It's part
of the game, you just move on."
On Sunday afternoon the Flyers tried
to keep a close game with their opponent
Rockhurst, but toward the end of the game
R o c k h u r s t
scored and
defeated the
Flyers 3-0.

During the
fi rst half Lewis fought back with fi ve shots,
but three missed the goal and two were
stopped by the Rockhurst goalie. After the
early goal, Frederick, who stopped nine
shots, and the rest of the defense would not
allow Rockhurst to score until late in the
second half. Rockhurst was able to mount
a late fury, scoring twice in the fi nal 10
minutes.
"The girls just ran out of gas," Bruno
said. "Some girls just couldn't handle
playing the full 90 minutes."
Their next games for this week will take
place on Saturday versus Grand Valley State University in Muchigan at 1 p.m., and Sunday agasinst Ferris State in Big Rapids, Mich at noon.
