The Lewis men's soccer team used
a pair of recent wins to move up in the
NCAA Great Lakes Region rankings.
Great Lakes Valley Conferenceopening
wins over Drury and Rockhurst
helped the Flyers move up four spots to
No. 5 in the National Soccer Coaches
Association
of America
NCAA
Division II
Great Lakes
Region poll.
It was the
greatest
improvement
by any Great
Lakes Region
team for the
week. Lewis
also extended
its winning
streak to three
matches and
has allowed
only one goal
during that
span.
On Sunday,
Cathal Brady
pushed the
Flyers to a
2-1 defeat of
Rockhurst on
their home
fi eld. With
the score tied
at 1-1, Brady
ran past a defender, gathered the ball and shot from
approximately 50 feet away into the left
side of the net. The goal, which went
in with only 1:25 left in the match, was
Brady's team-best third of the year.
A successful header by Haggi Leboo
off of a Rhodri Payne corner gave
Rockhurst the initial lead early in the
match. Lewis responded about 15 minutes
later after
Jorge
DeJesus
took control
of a loose
ball and
converted
on his
second
goal of
the young
season.
Flyers
freshman
keeper
Brian Byrne
stopped six Rockhurst shots successfully.
Rockhurst got only two shots on goal after
the halftime break despite getting a 21-10
advantage on total shots for the match.
The Flyers had just two shots on goal
themselves the entire match, but made the
most of them. Rockhurst had been ranked
No. 5 in the Great Lakes Region poll, with
the Flyers at No. 9 when the match was
played.
On Friday, the Flyers defeated Drury
by a 1-0 fi nal on Matt Field's fi rst goal of
the year. Field joined six other Flyers with
goals this year at the 57:13 mark, when he
took a Tito Lara pass and got the ball past
Drury goalie Tommy Fulmer. Lara now
has three assists for the season.
Bryne was in goal for his second
straight shutout for the Flyers. Lewis
outshot Drury 19-12 and had a 6-2 edge in
shots on goal and got off six corner kicks
to none
for Drury
during the
match.
Lewis
is now 4-
1 overall
and 2-0
in GLVC
play, which
ties it for
fi rst in the
conference
with
Northern
Kentucky. Southern Illinois is currently
leading the Great Lakes Region, followed
by Edwardsville, Northern Kentucky,
Indianapolis, Wisconsin-Parkside and the
Flyers. Rockhurst, Gannon, Missouri-
Ralla, Bellarmine, Truman State and
Ashland are the next teams in line. Lewis
did not crack the top 25 in the national
poll.
