Pair of Recent Wins moves Flyers up
The Lewis men's soccer team used a pair of recent wins to move up in the NCAA Great Lakes Region rankings.

After rolling through their seasonopening
tournament in Colorado and
posting a perfect 4-0 mark to claim the
Colorado Christian Tournament title,
the Lewis Flyers women's volleyball
team came into their annual Labor Day
weekend tournament with high hopes and
confi dence.
The 11-team, three-day tournament,
took place from Thursday, Sept. 1,
through Saturday, Sept. 3. The 11 teams
traveling from all across the US included
the University of Indianapolis, Minnesota
State-Moorhead, Minnesota State-
Mankato, Wisconsin Parkside, Winona
State, St. Xavier, St. Leo, Michigan Tech,
Armstrong Atlantic, and Sagniaw Valley
State. The Flyers reigned successful
during the three-day event, posting a 2-2
mark. This now gives the team a 6-2 season
record. Overall, Lewis fi nished in a tie for
fi fth, while Minnesota State- Moorhead won
the tournament
title by being the
lone unbeaten
team.
"I felt like
this was a great
tournament to
be a part of, and
every single
team brought
c o m p e t i t i o n ,
which forced
every team to bring their best every single
game," coach Karen Lockyer said. "I feel
we performed good at times and not so good
other times, but it's all a learning process
and I'm sure we will fi x the mistakes we
made this weekend."
Tournament play went under way
for the Flyers on Thursday night with
Lewis taking on regional rival Michigan
Tech. Lewis fought its way to a tough
and hard-earned win in fi ve games, with
scores of 30-22, 27-30, 30-20, 21-30 and
15-11. The Flyers were forced to scrap and
claw their way to a win in the decisive fi fth
game without starting sophomore setter
and previous week GLVC player of the
week Andrea Morrone. Morrone left late in
game four due to a knee injury. Stepping in
for Morrone was senior Abby Hodge, who
despite standing barely above fi ve-feet,
was able to produce three crucial late game
