Lewis aids hurricane relief

In response to the tragedy and suffering of thousands of people as a result of Hurricane Katrina, Lewis University has set in motion a variety of hurricane relief efforts.

The Committee to Coordinate Hurricane Relief (CCHR), led by co-coordinators Brother Joseph Martin and Carol Wassberg, may prove to be one of the most successful. This committee, created for the sole purpose of aiding hurricane victims, will be organizing events, raising funds, and providing assistance in any way possible. Faculty, staff and students are welcome and encouraged to join.

Wassberg, advisor to the university president, spoke of the committee's tentative plan of adopting a southern school destroyed by the hurricane.
"The objective is to rebuild the school by providing books, gym equipment and computers, but also, more importantly, to work with the families of those who attended the school," said Wassberg.

Regarding various on-campus attempts at relief, Wassberg said, "There are so many different relief options, but there needs to be a sense of coordination to it all." To start, Lewis University's CCHR will be raising funds in preparation for the arrival of southern evacuees to a shelter in Tinley Park, Ill., that will be able to accommodate 400 people.

The shelter is near Lewis' Tinley Park campus. The university has also accepted one student displaced by Katrina so far, and is making arrangements with another. Additionally, while the CCHR is working hard to provide relief, workers on campus have been ready and willing to help in their own ways.

"I've had faculty and staff offer to house people [evacuees], and that is a very generous thing," said Wassberg.
Rick Wemple, head cross-country coach, donated $400 along with his team to the Tinley Park effort.

In another effort to help southerners, Lewis University's annual Volunteer Outreach Spring Trip will be expanding to New Orleans. Anyone can participate in this week-long trip over spring break. The question is will time permit us to make it into New Orleans by springtime?
