Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity sponsored a freestyle competition in the Student Union Commons on April 21, 2005. During these last few weeks of school, the NPHC (National Pan-Hellenic Council) fraternities and sororities have been sponsoring events to entice enrollment to their establishments.
NPHC is currently composed of nine International Greek letter sororities and fraternities: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
The freestyle competition included Julian Franklin, Quinten Maddax, Kellen Monroe, Justin Thomas, and at the last minute after the competition, Richard Conley.
The Alpha who coordinated and arranged the competition was Prince Attium. The equipment manager was Adam Driggs (Chunky Chunk), with Darrich Orange (Doc Orange) and Michael Eck (DJ AKA) as the DJs for the event.
The first round was Thomas and Monroe. Each turn is 30 seconds of freestyle, which is an unpracticed, unwritten rap. There were two turns to conclude the round. For the first round, Thomas succeeded in defeating Monroe in each turn with lines like, "You remind me of a B2K extra." The crowd decided who won each round with a ruling of the louder cheer for the winning rapper.
The second round of the battle was between Maddax and Franklin. At the end of each turn Franklin had overwhelming crowd support because of the first line, "The only time I ever lost is when I'm battling me."
After that, Maddax had a tremendous task of winning the crowd back but in the middle of his turn he would just pause, making the delivery inconsistent.
Franklin's delivery remained constant and clear piling on top of his amazing, quick-thinking, witty punchlines. Franklin ended the round with an overpowering victory.
