You may not know that Lewis Cheerleading has come along way from when it started here. Lewis competed for the first time in a National competition in 2003 at Daytona Beach, Florida. Before that the cheerleading team consisted mostly of just cheering at basketball and volleyball home games, and an occasional exhibition performance.

The team got off to a rough start this year but hoped to redeem themselves at this year's competition. One of the main reasons this season started off rocky was because of the need to replace their previous coach. After several interviews, and many postponed practices, the team finally agreed on someone to take over. Enter Eric Osborne, an NCA staff member and announcer that has been involved with cheerleading for a large portion of his life.

Not having a coach for the first part of the season may have stirred up some set backs for the team, for example the team held a late try out mid season picking up four new members. Getting off to a late start also led to many missed practices.

The team got some new uniforms, members, a coach, and a two-minute and 15 second action packed routine. This years team consists of 17 team members: the team is led by Maggie Slosar and Krista Rue, other members include, Stefanie Lebre, Ashley Sneddon, Brandon McGhee, Jennifer Hayward, Andy Brown, Arkita Luckett, Talanda Thompson, Ashley Contreras, Robin Jaquinde, Kristyn Holajn, Antonia Steinmiller, Kim Vermett, Jessica Gones, Shaun'ta Whitehead, Heather Collins and of course Bed Check Charlie which is so proudly handled by mascot Steve Oria.

The team went to Daytona with a positive attitude, dedicated teamwork and high hopes about this year's competition routine. The team had goals of pulling through and coming out of the competition proud. Lewis competed in the Division II small co-ed from Apr. 6-10, and faced some pretty tough competitors.

In their first year, 2003, the team took 14th in the nation at the all-girl division, which was Lewis' first ever appearance at nationals. The second year, 2004, the team cleaned up and jumped from 14th to 5th in the small coed division.

After much hard work and dedication the long awaited Nationals took place the first week of April. The Lewis cheerleaders did well and placed 13th in the small co-ed division. The team had some minor music difficulties, which cost them a penalty, and some deductions, but overall it was a great performance. The team stuck it out and did well. This year's performance executed great difficulty, transitions, and flavor, leading to an overall great performance.

The Lewis University Cheerleading squad continues to improve and make us proud; we should all give them a hand.
