Dr. Eva Bacon is a part of the History Department at Lewis University. She is also one of the sole providers for each globalization presentation on campus. She introduced, in the Sancta Alberta Chapel, Dr. Carl Knightingale who titled his presentation Ghetto in the Global Village. The main premise of the presentation was the urban racial segregation for historical and intentional purposes and the globalization of the concept of the ghetto.
Knightingale spoke of how Europe's cities are Americanizing and conforming to intentional segregation.
Knightingale said America views the ghetto in different ways because, as hip-hop being a huge part of our modern society, some rappers see the ghetto and view pride. And yet some other rappers my dwell in ghettos and experience sensations of frustrations and envy. Some groups use the ghetto with pride and identification with rap groups like the 'Geto Boys' and 'Ghetto Concept' heard in part of Europe.
Most rappers that originate from New York come from the South Bronx. Knightingale commented "South Bronx has globalized itself, because of the image it gives to aspiring rappers around the world. The negativity of the image associated with the ghetto is, as Knightingale stated, the graffiti, unemployed minorities, and money from paychecks contributed to welfare.
Knightingale said the reality of the ghetto is white people created the ghettos in America. The definition of a ghetto is a section of a city occupied by a minority group who live there especially because of social, economic, or legal pressure.
Inevitably, if there are ghettos in an area then the concept of segregation equals inequality and the current were created by white people because when another race starts to move into an area then white start to move out. Then the price of a house will fall for a white person and rise for a black or Hispanic person depending on the dominant race in the neighborhood. This leaves that area to become solely occupied by that particular race.
