The newest show being broadcast from Lewis University's own radio station is bringing energy to the airwaves.
Named the "D-Nights" show after DJs Doctor Orange, otherwise known as Darren Orange, and DJ Aka, a.k.a. Michael Eck, it airs every Tuesday night from 9 p.m. to midnight. With the help of Adam "Chunky Chunk" Driggs, Alex Pepke and Andrew "Northwest" Northrup, this radio show is quickly becoming one of the most talked about in WLRA history.
Each week, the show starts with an hour of requests from callers and the DJs themselves. Between songs, they talk enthusiastically about events on and off campus, university athletics, as well as general news. The DJs also use this time to introduce any weekly contests or surprise guests they have scheduled for later in the show.
At 10, the DJs send their personal shoutouts to the listeners, and then open the mic to callers who have their own. By 11 the studio is becoming filled with visitors who want to be a part of the freestyle battles that D-Nights is becoming famous for.
DJ Aka says, "The show is everything I dreamed of and then a little more; The D-Night crew is all about creativity and great times, true story."
The segment "Win a Date with Chunky Chunk" debuted on Feb. 8, in which female callers were asked trivia questions about Chunky Chunk to qualify for the final competition. Enough ladies participated to justify two winners, so Doctor Orange volunteered to go on a date as well.
Winners Shannon Brondsema and Sarah McKinney met Chunky Chunk and Doctor Orange in the Courtyard Café on Valentine's Day for a breakfast date, which Chunky Chunk wrote a song about and performed during the next show.
Chunk said, "Shannon was rad and she made me feel all...fuzzy...inside." Doctor Orange had fun as well. "The date was cool, I wanted to do something a bit out going. It was radical and I'd totally be up for doing another one for the show."
The next big contest the boys are working on is called "Be Chunky Chunk's Secretary." Using the same elimination process of the date contest, the plan is to find a volunteer, preferably a lady volunteer of course, to help out in the studio by talking to callers, taking requests, and assisting the DJs during the show.
