In the past two weeks, the women's track team competed in the Lewis Invitational on Feb. 12 and the Chicagoland Indoor Track Championships Feb. 18.

In the Lewis Invite, the Flyer women won eight individual events and posted two provisional qualifying marks for nationals.

Christina James won the 200-meter dash with a national qualifying time of 25.85 and Alicia Weise improved her qualifying mark to a new school record throw of 56'5.5" in the weight throw, giving her a first place finish. Weise also won the shot put with a toss of 41'2".

Erin Mitchell broke her own school record on the way to a first place finish in the pole vault by jumping 10'6".

Other first place finishers in their events included Becky Herbert in the 3000-meter run with a time of 11:22.35; Alyssa Hancock in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.32; Heidi Bloom in the triple jump with a leap of 35'9"; and the 4x200-meter relay of Alyssa Hancock, Jasmine Williams, Cathea Pitts and Christina James with a time of 1:46.08.

The results of the Chicagoland Championships were just as impressive as the week before. The Flyers placed third out of 21 teams behind Northern Illinois and Valparaiso University, but were the first in non-Division I teams.

Christina James was the leading scorer for the Flyers with 16 points. James won the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.88 and finished third in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.27.

Weise, Terran Wertz and Williams also scored in two individual events.

Weise finished third in the weight throw with a toss of 57'3.75", breaking her own school record and moving up in the national rankings. She also finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 41'1.75". Wertz placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:22.23 and fourth in the mile run with a time of 5:27.65. Williams placed fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.88 and sixth in the 55-meter dash, running a time of 7.51.

Other scores for the Flyers were Becky Herbert in the 5000-meter run with a time of 19:11.8, giving her a third place finish; Alyssa Hancock was fourth in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.4 and Kaydie King ran a 8.69 in the 55-meter hurdles, good enough for a fifth place finish.

The Flyers track team competes tommorow at the GLVC Indoor Track Championships, hosted by St. Joseph's. Head coach Bob Schultz said he expects his athletes to be competitive in all the events and for the team to have their best meet of the season.

"Southern Illinois has a pretty good lock for first, but there will be a close race for the second through sixth spots in the team standings between Lewis, Indianapolis, Southern Indiana, St. Joseph's and Parkside."

The track team also competes at the Division II National Championships March 11-12 in Boston, Mass.
