Some came in groups conversing, others walked alone, but the destination was the same: Sancta Alberta Chapel at Lewis University on Monday, February 14, 2005 at 3.30 p.m. Many had identification tags. They found seats at their own convenience and continued their conversations.
But all of a sudden, there was silence. You could hear a pin drop. The assembly looked at the main entrance first and then the side entrance; there was nothing spectacular in either direction.
Then everyone saw the 'paparazzi' moving towards the side entrance of the chapel.
A few minutes later, there emerged five gentlemen; all of them clad in black suits with white collar shirts- the official habit of the Christian Brothers. And sure enough, one of them was Brother Alvara Rodriguez Echeverria, FSC, Superior General of the Christian Brothers. The others in his company were: Brother Miguel Campos, FSC, P.HD, General Councillor in Rome, Brother Francis Carr, FSC, Provincial for the Midwest District of the De La Salle Christian Brothers and a Trustee of Lewis Unviersity, Brother Armand Alcazar, FSC, P.HD, Auxiliary Provincial and former professor of Theology at Christian Brothers University in Memphis and Brother Martin Spellman, FSC, Director of the Provincialate Community.
The assembly welcomed them and the business began which was "My Experience in a Catholic and Lasallian University." Five panelists had been chosen to share their experience as students, staff and faculty of Lewis University. Dr. Stephany Schlachter, Provost and moderator of the day, introduced them.
We all know that every house has a head and that head usually welcomes officially the visitors. In our case, Brother James Gaffney, President of Lewis University, welcomed the visitors and the assembly.
He said Brother Alvara was visiting a selected few Lasallian Institutions in the US. He thanked him for putting Lewis on his shortlist of places to visit. Gaffney said the Superior's visit was so important to the Community because in him they see St. John Baptist de La Salle.
