In the current NCAA Division II indoor track and field power rankings, the Lewis University men's track team is ranked first in the nation. Theses rankings are based on a dual meet concept, which means they would win against any other team in Division II based on the results.
"It is a nice boost of confidence for the runners and they deserve it" said Head Coach Bob Schultz after finding out about the ranking.
Proving the Flyers have what it takes to go to nationals, two more athletes were added to the provisional qualifying list. This past weekend at the Illinois Wesleyan Titan Open, placing third out of 52 other 200-meter runners was Mel Denhem, who had a provisional qualifying time of 22.31 seconds.
"I was really excited to make it on the list as a freshman, but I still need to improve my time to actually make it to nationals," Denham said about his performance.
Following Denhem in fifth place, but also qualifying, was Geoff Rozovics. He ran it in 22.44 seconds and said, "I felt good during the race, so I was not surprised with my time." He also added, "There are still things I can improve, but I am really excited to have qualified."
J'ean Middleton placed third out of 35 runners in the 400-meter run with a time of 49.95 seconds. Billy Stadele, who has already qualified in previous meets, placed fifth out of 28 runners in the 55-meter hurdles. " I need to fine tune my mechanics and work on improving my technique," said Stadele.
For distance, Juan Carillo placed second out of 33 runners with a time of 4:21.12. Following Carillo, Larry Anzalone finished up fifth with a time of 4:29. Byron Toliver had a long jump of 21-8, placing him fifth out of 25 jumpers. Overall, the Flyers finished fifth out of 14 teams.
The Flyers had an extremely successful weekend at the Iowa State Open on Jan. 28-29. Pole-vaulter Mark Zilch automatically qualified for Division II nationals. He soared eight inches higher than the previous school record held by Duane Chappell. He soared 18-01/2 inches, which beat his own personal record by 11 inches.
