The Lewis University women's basketball team finished their three-game home stand strong with back to back victories against St. Joe's and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.
The Flyers led throughout the entire game against St.Joe's and at one time led by as many as 18 points
before winning 80-66. Lewis led by just four at the half before jumping out quickly to start the second.
Darcee Schmidt led a balanced attack for the Flyers with 24 points on 80 percent shooting, to go along with seven rebounds. Shante Glenn added 19 points while pulling down eight rebounds and dishing out five assists. Mary Moskal and Erin Cox also scored in double figures with 17 and 12 points respectively.
The biggest difference in the game was shooting, as the Flyers shot 47.3 percent to the Pumas 35.7 percent.
"We have seen more zone recently, so we put in a new offense," coach Lynn Plett said. "We were able to get
more people involved and some others were able to step up because of sickness."
The final game of the home stretch for the Flyers was against SIUE. Once again the Flyers led virtually throughout the game en route to an 81-71 victory. The Flyers led by as many as 16 in the second half, and twice the Cougars were able to cut it to six, but both
times they could get no closer.
Schmidt was the story in the first half, scoring all 16 of her points before halftime. However, the story of the game was Brittney Diener who had a career-high of 12 assists. As Diener was dishing out the ball, just about everyone else was scoring it. Five players scored in double figures all together, led by Moskal's 17. She also hauled in eight boards, and helped out Diener in the passing department with seven assists.
Overall, the Flyers had 23 assists on 29 baskets. Glenn added 16 points, while Cox put in 13 and Tenesha McDaniel had 10. Lewis out shot the Cougars 49 percent to 39 percent for the game.
"We were able to take care of business," Plett said. "The execution against the zone was good, especially since we haven't had the confidence. We have to be ready though because we are going to see more of it."
