In a season filled with ups and downs, the Lewis University men's basketball team added another tally to its "up" column with a 69-62 upset over 11th ranked Southern Illinois--Edwardsville last Saturday at the Neil Carey Arena.
The victory was the Flyers third win in four games and lifted them to eight place in the GLVC standings. Lewis is currently 9-12 overall (4-10 GLVC) and they occupy the seventh spot in the eigth-team tournament picture with six games remaining this season. With the loss SIUE, rated number three in the Great Lakes Region, fell to 18-5 overall (11-3 GLVC).
The Flyers were led in scoring by senior Randy Wright with 18 points, including four three-pointers. Wright sparked Lewis to a 16-10, advantage midway through the first half after netting consecutive perimeter jumpers. However, SIUE would answer with Anthony Jones hitting on two straight treys of his own to spark the Cougars to a 16-6 run that gave the visitors a 26-22 edge with 4:25 left in the half.
Soon after, the Flyers defense would clamp down, holding SIUE to a lone free throw the rest of the way. Baskets by Pat Monaghan, Steve Turner and an Anthony Scala three gave the Flyers a 29-27 halftime lead.
The Flyers continued to pour it on in the second half with Wright again finding his outside touch, sinking consecutive 3-pointers to ignite an 11-4 run that gave the Flyers a 51-38 lead with 11:01 remaining.
The Cougars refused to falter and sliced the Lewis lead to 62-57 with under two minutes left to play. Monaghan then hit a jumper in the lane with just under a minute left following an SIUE offensive foul, and the Flyers held on from there.
SIUE came in ranked third in scoring defense in Division II, allowing an average of 60.2 points per game. But it was Lewis that earned in the better defensive effort, yielding its lowest point total of the season in a GLVC game.
Wright was joined in double figures by Scala's 12 points and Monahan's 11.
In the loss, SIUE's J.B. Jones scored 22 points and added five assists. Dan Heimos added 14 points and six rebounds, and Anthony Jones notched 11 points.
Steve Turner grabbed a game-high of seven rebounds and scored nine points. Meanwhile, DeAndre Williams dished out a game-high seven assists and Dustin Warfield collected five rebounds for Lewis, which earned a 27-23 edge on the boards.
The Flyers are in action tomorrow night against the new GLVC leader, Southern Indiana, at 3:15 p.m.
LAYUPS: SIUE came in shooting 50 percent from the floor - good for 13th in the nation - and shot exactly that with a 24-of-48 effort. But the Flyers were superior at the foul line, converting 19 of 22 to SIUE's 9 of 19.
Wright has had his best scoring games of the season against the Cougars. He scored a career-high 23 points in the Flyers' 79-68 loss at SIUE back in November.
